Flamenco Rhythm {Alegrías con palmas}

Here is the second video for the rhythm of alegrías. José joins Manuel to demonstrate the typical palmas patterns for alegrías.

After recording these videos (and some more for bulerías but that is another story) the conversation turned to whether flamenco rhythm and music can be broken down enough to be explained and taught.

Flamenco Rhythm {Tangos con palmas}

Once you've been practicing for a while you'll naturally find a rhythm that you are happy to work in. For me that rhythm was tangos, for a long time when ever we would work on footwork or marcaje or palmas in class i would relax and thiink 'Hah! this is so easy! I can do this with my eyes closed'.

The Spanish word 'palmas' refers to the rhythmic hand clapping that all who take part in flamenco have to learn.

As dancers we learn palmas to help us study the different flamenco rhythms but we must also learn how we use our palmas to accompany other dancers, singers and musicians.
